Our work on the project “Space Is Our Future” continues. We have already launched a paper rocket, a helicopter, simulated the movement of the rocket, created 3D models. And what else would be interesting and informative to learn about space exploration? And here Ivan Savchynskyi came to my aid. The student is in the seventh grade. His hobby is Lego design. This has been his hobby since childhood. But now it has grown into the creation of animation.

It all started in July 2019. Then Ivan's first cartoon appeared. Then the collection began to replenish. A youtube channel has appeared. It's called “amigos production” because “amigos” means “friends” in Spanish, and Ivan makes all the cartoons for his friends. The hobby is supported by the family. Mum, dad, younger brother help with the sound. The next stage of work was to create a site and organize movies by category. The site also contains tips for those who want to design films.

The subject of films has a fairly wide range. This is about a police patrol at sea and on land, about gold diggers, fantastic stories, environmental issues, diseases of civilization, firefighters, builders…

Especially for the project "Space Is Our Future" Ivan released a new series of films. He also invited us to his design studio. We saw how much patience this job requires. It was very exciting to see how the figures come to life, how the work in the city of LEGO is in full swing, how new ideas and scenarios are being implemented.

Ivan told his classmates about the process of creating animation.

        Stages of project implementation.

1.      Write a script. Each animated film, even a mini-cartoon, requires a script.

2.      Preparation of characters. If we want to make a LEGO-cartoon, we will select the necessary figures from the LEGO constructor.

3.      Perform frame-by-frame animation. Now you need to take a series of photos where the characters will change positions according to the plot. For each simple movement of the characters you need to make at least 2-3 frames.

4.      Install a program for creating cartoons. Add a photo and create a video series.

5.      We impose a sound.

6.      Save the finished cartoon

And finally - the plot of a new series.

Together to successful communication and learning

The parent community is an important ally of the school in the education and training of students. Established cooperation of parents, teachers and students helps to create a classroom environment that provides opportunities to meet the needs of a child in cognition, communication and provides free expression in a variety of activities.

Therefore, as part of our project Space Is Our Future, training for parents was conducted. We have reviewed resources that can be considered for the study, research and deepening of knowledge about space. The resources which will give parents and students more inspiration on how to connect science, technology, engineering and math. It will help to find common topics for communication between parents and children, will make their joint leisure rich and complete.

Namely, we considered the following resources https://www.airbus.com/company/sustainability/airbus-foundation/discovery-space.html and the possibility of their use for parents

https://www.airbus.com/company/sustainability/airbus-foundation/discovery-space/parents.html

“Discovery Space is a fun place for your children to explore accessible, ready-to-use materials, designed by experts and presented in a safe and trusted virtual environment. Explore our videos, aviation crafts, space art ideas, games, design challenges and quizzes, and discover science together.

Let’s explore aviation together: support your children’s science education with these accessible videos that explore how different objects fly, how aircraft have evolved and are designed today, and what you can expect on a flight – including how planes take off, land and navigate.

Let’s build our own space mission: how will we get to the moon, set up a community, survive the harsh conditions and travel across its surface? Show your children these easy-to-understand videos and then help them take part in space activities, crafts and design challenges.

Let’s reinvent the future with science: current trends like urbanisation, digitalisation, automation and sustainability are shaping the world of today and tomorrow. Help your children understand the impact emerging technologies will have on the way we fly, manufacture and live with this selection of informative videos.”

Geogebra

Make a Paper Mars Helicopter

 Make a Paper Mars Helicopter

Make a Paper Mars Helicopter

https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/edu/learn/project/make-a-paper-mars-helicopter/?fbclid=IwAR3499cIlNnP48Y4MOhpui6zha0Y1-P_qZBQCRC-BM_SI7DQhEeVEM5Bl-w

Boundless, fantastic, mysterious - so distant and at the same time so close, so native and at the same time so alien space attracts us, inspires and motivates us to never stop exploring the space around us, ask difficult questions and seek answers, dream of discovering new worlds and believe in existence of something really unexpected.

If you are interested in space, construction and research, then this post is for you! Our activity today is to create a cardboard rover for our own space mission.

NASA's Perseverance Mars rover launched in July 2020, carrying the first helicopter to the surface of Mars! This helicopter has to be lightweight and have large blades to fly on Mars. These large blades rotate so quickly that they generate enough lift to overcome the gravity of the Red Planet and lift off the ground.

In this project, students will build a paper helicopter. Then, just as NASA engineers had to try out different versions of the Mars helicopter before coming up with a final design, students will experiment with the design of their helicopters to see what works best.

Procedures

1.    Students describe how a helicopter flies. They conclude that the rotary blades should be slightly at an angle so that they can press on the air and lift the helicopter off the ground.

2.    The students conclude that the force of the blades against the air can overcome the weight of the helicopter and push it off the ground. The helicopter works against the force of gravity - which constantly pulls the helicopter down to the ground - and generates an ascending force called "lift", rotating the blades in the air. When the lifting force is greater than the force of gravity, the helicopter rises from the ground and flies.

Discussion

1.    Which helicopters reach the ground earlier: those that rotate faster or slower?

2.    How does the speed of rotation affect the flight of a real helicopter?

3.    How was your experience in designing and testing a paper helicopter similar to how NASA engineers designed and tested the Ingenuity Mars helicopter?

Rating

1.      Students have the opportunity to experiment with the design of their helicopter to change the characteristics.

2.      Students demonstrated the ability to predict rotation based on experimental data.

Perhaps this lesson will help students choose a future profession. After all, an astronaut is a profession not only of today, but also a profession of the future. Probably, one day there will come a day when each of us will be able to feel like an astronaut and see the beauty of our planet from the height of a space orbit.

Space Is Our Future - Fly me to the Moon

Learning scenario "Mission to the Moon: Fly me to the Moon" By Barry McGuire helped me to develop my own learning scenario in the "Aerospace in Class"

http://storage.eun.org/resources/upload/281/20210226_122831513_281_AERO_Learning-Scenario_I.1._McGuire-V14.pdf

The purpose of my lesson is to involve and stimulate children to learn about rocket flight. The students designed and programmed the rocket to show the importance of aerodynamics. They also learned about various forces that can affect their missiles.

During this lesson, students:

• Identified the main features of rockets designed for space travel

• Identified the design features required for a safe space flight

• Created and made their own rocket

• Tested the flight of the missile they developed and reviewed the findings.

The children watched the video "Launch into space", https://www.airbus.com/virtual.html?uuid=9fe99504-d265-47a9-9b5c-ad74843ae7f4&title=Airbus-Foundation-Discovery-Space:-Launching-into-space  created by the Airbus Discovery Space Foundation. After watching the video, the students discussed the word "Aerodynamics". They discussed why one shape is more aerodynamic than another, and where they could see it in the world around them.

The questions asked include:

- How exactly does a rocket engine work?

- What factors will affect your space launch?

- How can we design an aerodynamic rocket to fly to the moon?

After discussing these features, we looked at "How to Fly in Space" https://www.airbus.com/virtual.html?uuid=051b9bfc-794c-45c4-8b9f-089ad7ca0072&title=Airbus-Foundation-Discovery-Space-How-to-fly-in-space  and discussed what gravity means and how it will affect rocket launch and flight.

The questions asked include:

- What does gravity do?

- How does gravity affect you?

- Is gravity the same on the earth and the moon?

After studying and understanding the theoretical material, the children began to perform tasks.

Fifth, sixth and seventh graders at https://scratch.mit.edu/  created their own models of missiles and made them fly. The children used cyclic and branching algorithms to make their rocket travel more realistically in space.

Eighth graders wrote a python program that calculated the speed of a rocket in space depending on various parameters.

Tenth graders at https://www.tinkercad.com/classrooms  have developed models of spacecraft. The children took into account the main aspects of aerodynamics.

In this learning scenario, children thought creatively and were innovative in their design and how they applied their learning to their project. When designing their rockets, children encountered some problems and were asked to use critical thinking and problem-solving skills to find a solution.

Teamwork, communication and collaboration with each other are vital skills for children that will allow them to progress effectively at every step of the process.

We travel without leaving our classroom

Cultural life in conditions in a state of emergency situation must be continued. Therefore, an online excursion for students was realized and conducted.

A lesson in a museum is a great opportunity to put school knowledge into practice in an unusual space flight situation. And although the flight is not real yet, the students have to solve real problems.

It was the virtual tour of the National Museum of Cosmonautics named after S.P.Korolyova in Zhytomyr. This is the only one museum of cosmonautics in Ukraine.

The students imagined themselves as brave conquerors of space depths and walked under a huge spaceship, they looked in detail at the fragments of the meteorite, the lunar soil and got to know about food in tubes the astronauts took in their flight.

The exposition was created by the Public artist of Ukraine Anatolii Vasylovych Haidamaka.

The tour ended with a final conversation, during which we summarized, systematized what we saw and heard, we highlighted the most important and expressed our impressions and assessments.

Visiting the museum motivated students to create beautiful drawings of future spacecrafts.

Feedback from students about visiting the museum.

I remember the Soyuz-27 spacecraft's lander; 9 milligrams of lunar soil; exhibition sample of the Soyuz spacecraft, models of the Lunokhod-2 and the life-size launch vehicle of the Gagarin Vostok; astronauts flying things, space food. If the opportunity arises, my family and I will definitely visit this museum (Makhnitska Vladislava, 6th grade student)

Here you can see numerous examples of space technology, look at simulators, which were worked on by experienced specialists, get acquainted with the landing spacecraft, in which the astronauts returned to earth, a rocket engine. It is possible to contemplate the model of the Moonwalker-2, spacesuits. An important role in the feeling of space is played by the central part of the exhibition "Space" - a small pool filled with water in the center of the hall, which houses the Bible. I also liked the short videos, which tell about welding in space, sound recording. (Mikhail Grinik, 8th grade student)

Space Is Our Future

"Man must rise above Earth to the top of the atmosphere and beyond, for only then will he fully understand the world in which he lives" – Socrates.

Online activities introduce students to the history of domestic and world astronautics. With the help of STEM, children build, explore, and program space objects and plan flights to the stars.

In early March, I registered for a great course from the European school academy Aerospace in Class. During the course, I learned a lot of new, useful, and important information. Applying the course material, I developed a lesson plan and implemented it with the students at my school. The lessons involved students from Grade 5 to Grade 10.

Since we are currently studying online, my activities were organized via zoom, taking into account the time limits for students of different ages. The cycle of activities lasted from April 8 to April 18, so as to include April 12 – the International Day of Human Space Flight.

During the first stage of the lesson, the students were familiarized with the history of flights, literary works by famous writers and the development of astronautics; later, they went on a virtual tour of the National Museum of Cosmonautics.

Then the students worked with the resources from https://www.airbus.com/. The use of the Airbus Foundation Discovery Space piqued the students' interest and stimulated creativity and motivation. The children watched videos, discussed them, and put forward various hypotheses about space travel.

The next step was to study the jet motion and determine the speed of a spacecraft relative to the Earth. After working on the physics material, the students compiled a Python program to visualize the results. At the same stage, younger students were working with  https://www.airbus.com/company/sustainability/airbus-foundation/discovery-space/kids/mission-to-the-moon.html, where they learned about space and how to survive it by playing exciting games. Following that, they made a Scratch project for a flight to the Moon.

My students also enjoyed the construction of a paper rocket and its launch. Another group of students also showed their creativity by creating models of rockets in Tinkercad.

Finally, the use of resources from https://www.geogebra.org/ allowed us to study, explore, and understand complex space processes with the help of mathematics. Dynamic models made it possible for the students and the teacher to illustrate, visualize and demonstrate various astronomical concepts.

I believe that thanks to these activities, space will become a lot closer to my students in the future.
